Examples of the education endowments in Islamic history

Education constitutes the foundations on which societies are built, and determines their economic and social development. IBW is continuing a great Islamic tradition by supporting education through Waqf. Throughout history, Muslims celebrated knowledge and sought it in the East and the West. They spent generously in the cause of education, building schools and mosques, and dedicated Waqf funds to spend on students so that they could devote themselves to learning.

The traveller Ibn Jubayr Al-Andalusi recalled from his travels that Baghdad alone had thirty schools - a large number at that time - the largest of which was the Al Nizamiya School. He noted that the schools were funded through Waqf and real estate allocated to them, and that their proceeds funded the schools, the scholars and teachers, and the students.
Indeed, the waqf of Al Nizamiya school in Baghdad solely amounted to fifteen thousand dinars per month. There, major scholars both studied and taught, including those at the level of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali.
Ibn Khaqan (one of the ministers of the Abbasid state) dedicated a portion of his wealth as a waqf to establish a public library in the city of Samarra. He supplied it with books and reproduced books from the libraries of Baghdad. This library was a means of spreading knowledge in different parts of the country, in contrast to the previous centralisation of knowledge and the sciences to capital cities.
