Safe Water and Wells Waqf shares

Water is a basic necessity for life but many communities around the world suffer from a severe shortage of clean drinking water, which negatively impacts their health, their daily lives and livelihoods.

Donate to this Waqf and be part of the solution. Your support will mean more families have wells they can access and clean water supplies in their local area.

How access to water transforms lives

Water is a precious resource but for many communities access is a challenge; one made worse by the rise in conflicts and natural disasters. Hundreds of millions of people around the world suffer from water scarcity.

Your Waqf for water endowment can make a huge difference to people’s lives, alleviating from them the daily burden of walking long distances to fetch water - a task that often falls to women and girls, preventing their participation in education or paid work. For those with no choice but to drink polluted water, having access to clean water will mean protection from poor health and disease. Installing water supplies also helps revive livelihoods as rural communities are able to grow crops and feed their animals.

The water projects supported by IBW aim to help communities around the world including in Pakistan and Somalia, as well as in countries struggling with ongoing conflict in Yemen, Syria and in Palestine.

The best charity is giving water

“And We created from water every living thing,” (Al Anbya: 30)

“There is no charity greater in reward than water.” (Hadith, Al Albani)

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "While a man was walking on his way he became extremely thirsty. He found a well and went down into it to drink water. Upon leaving it, he saw a dog that was panting out of thirst. His tongue was lolling and he was eating moist earth from extreme thirst. The man thought to himself: 'This dog is extremely thirsty as I was.' So he descended into the well, filled up his leather sock with water, and holding it in his teeth, climbed up and quenched the thirst of the dog. Allah appreciated his action and forgave his sins."

The Companions asked, "Shall we be rewarded for showing kindness to the animals also?"

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "A reward is given in connection with every living creature,” (Hadith, Al Bukhari and Muslim)

Your questions on water endowments answered

  • Will my Waqf water donation make a difference?

Access to clean water is an urgent need in many communities. About a quarter of the planet's population (two billion people) use polluted water for drinking and other water needs.
This kills more than 840,000 a year as a result of waterborne illnesses. Your donation could make a life-saving difference.

  • What does Islam say about water as charity?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that the best charity is “giving water.” In one narration, a prostitute was forgiven after she gave water to a dog. And in another, the importance of quenching the thirst of every living being is emphasised. Water is mentioned multiple times in the Qur’an, and in reference to the stories of a number of prophets.

The opportunity to contribute to the digging of wells, establishing water sources, building canals or filtering polluted water to help save lives is a gift to society and if done as an act of charity brings great spiritual rewards. It is considered one of the deeds whose impact extends to society and whose reward doubles for the one who goes good due to it being a form of ongoing charity.

There is a reward for the donor in every sip of water, for every ablution the water is used for, and for every benefit it brings to for people, plants, animals and the planet.

  • How will my Waqf water share be invested?

Donations from this Waqf will be invested in a variety of diverse projects that comply with Shariah principles, and proceeds and revenues will be spent in areas that our other Waqf may not cover.

Through this Waqf we seek investments that generate returns that can be used to support self-sufficiency and sustainability for communities, building their resilience in the face of conflict, hardship and other disasters. Your donations will contribute to supporting communities on an ongoing basis.
